THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF URBINO

These two very famous works of the Italian Renaissance were painted by Piero della Francesca between 1415 and 1492 and hang facing each other in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The profiles of Federico da Montefeltro, the Duke of Urbino, and Battista Sforzia appear in front of the beautiful landscape of the city of Urbino to highlight the importance of this city. The Duchess is richly dressed, the fine details of the lace on her sleeves clearly visible.
The Duke had lost his right eye in a jousting tournament and, as a result, he had the bridge of his nose removed for greater vision. Because the right side of his face was disfigured, only the left side was painted. The Duke was a mercenary soldier and a brilliant strategist who was also primarily responsible for turning Urbino into a famous and respected cultural center. He supported humanistic education, the development of the fine arts and the construction of a great library and of the Ducal Palace of Urbino, one of the great architectural achievements of the Renaissance. For this, he was called the “Light of Italy.”
