ETRUSCAN DOUBLE FLUTE PLAYER

Found on the walls of the Etruscan Tomb of the Leopards in Tarquinia, Italy, the fresco of the Double Flute Player reminds us of how significant music was to the Etruscans, a humane, seafaring and life-loving people who predated the Roman Empire. Etruscan flautists were famous among the Greeks and Romans for their virtuosity.

The players of the Double Flute, called “auleta” in Etruscan, took part in many aspects of Etruscan life including accompanying hunting ceremonies and religious rites. According to Timaeus who wrote in the 4th century BCE, they played the flute to attract the wild boars who were captivated by the music and came out of the woods only to be caught by the hunters. Etruscans believed that the sound of the flute had a magical power over men and animals
